Dogsledding in the Arctic

I was invited up the Longyearbyen which is an island in the Svalbard region about 500 miles from the North Pole for the 3rd annual North Pole Rock Paper Scissors Classic. Getting the chance to go dogsledding in such a wonderful location has got to be one of the great experiences of my life.

Chapter 03. An odd turn of events

What brought us to New Zealand in the first place was, believe it or not, a Rock Paper Scissors Promotion that was being staged by New Zealand Telecom. As the authors of the book "The Official RPS Strategy Guide" and the leaders of the World RPS Society, we often get invited to travel to some fun places. So my partner/brother also became the one and only 'invited guest' to our elopement (although he didn't find out about it until after we all had arrived). Anyway, perhaps the most surreal experiences in my life occoured in this elevator while Doug was doing a Radio interview on some morning talk show. It proved quite difficult for all of us to keep a straight face, but it is goofy moments like these that makes life such a wonderful ride.

Chapter 1 - I feel like a rock n' roll chick

Andrea couldn't decide where we should have our wedding: Canada or the Czech Republic. Each option provided various levels of benefits and challenges. So we came to the conclusion that the best course of action was to elope in New Zealand since we had already planned a trip there.

We also decided to vlog our wedding as best as we could (which is a rather hard thing to do when you are busy getting...well...married) so all of our family and friends could see what we missed. I have finally finished putting the video together, so over the course of 15 episodes, you are invite to be a part of our celebrations.

Here is the full video I did for Rocketboom while at the Weallspeakfootball.com bloggers house in Berlin.

It is about the Street Football World Championshipsthat took place as part of the World Cup festivities. The event was a great counterpoint to the commercialism of the World Cup. These kids all come from underprivileged circumstances from all over the world and were playing for nothing more than the chance to travel and love of the game. It was really interesting to film them and learn a little bit about how football is helping to bring messages of hope from some very troubled areas of the world. If these kid's views represent the future of their respective countries, then it is time for me to become an official optimist.

Changing gears here a bit in this post. Instead of traveling around the world, I figure it is time to turn the camera on the place that I live: the Czech Republic.

This is a video I shot last summer on an excursion I made with my wife's family to a couple of castle ruins about 40 minutes outside of Prague. The Czech Republic is littered with at least 1000 castles. I much prefer visiting the ruins, becuase they are generally more open, as opposed to the important castles that you must take a tour.

Sunset on Everest

Everest is often clouded over, so being able to see this mountain on a beautiful clear sunset evening was probably one of my greatest travel moments. To put things in perspective, basecamp is at 5200 metres above sea level (over 17,000 feet) which means that when you are standing there looking at the mountain you are at a higher altitude than almost every peak in the Rocky Moutains.

This is probably as fitting an ending as any for this series of 36 videos on my trip to Tibet. Hope you enjoyed following me along.

Unless you are tenting it, there is only one place to stay at Everest Base Camp. The Rongbuk Monestary Guesthouse. Certainlly not one of the nicest guesthouses around, but it does have one thing that no other guesthouses in the World has and it is well worth any discomfort.

It is always fun to have a goal when you travel, even if it is simply symbolic. Years ago when i traveled after University my goal was to get from London to Hong Kong without taking any planes. Today with less time available I have to settle for smaller goals. So if yo are going to settler for something small you might as well make it as big as you can. And that is what Everest became for us. We were not going to climb it but just getting to be there gave a real sense of purpose.

The day before we got there we stayed a rather 'posh' hotel by Tibetian standards. When it comes to hotel rooms, sometime you win and sometimes you lose and it is easy to see who got the better end here.

Seeing the Himalayian mountain range for the first time (well, I lie a bit, we saw it from the plane on the way to Lhasa) is a pretty spectactular experience. We got our first view of Everest (lie again, saw Everest peaking from the clouds on that flight) and got exctied about getting even closer as we made our way to the base camp. Perfect day too (no lie there)

The Yak Train

In my romanticized view of Tibet I always had the image of seeing a Yak Train carrying goods through the mountains and I always wondered if I was being a tad sterotypical in this thinking. Obviously, I wasn't.
Sometimes it can be very hard to capture the calmness of a moment like this. This Yak train was getting away from me fast, so with only a short window to capture this, I had to work feverishly which really means that I was not able to appreiate this moment until I was back at home editing it.

Visiting Nomads

Tibet still has nomadic people. These Yak herders were camped out not to far from the road so we decided to drop by for a little visit. The night before, the hotel we stayed at gave us a carepackge with all sorts of bath and sewing stuff, so we gave it to them and they seemed appreciative.

It is too bad we can't send the photos that we all took together ...being of no fixed address and all.

I love small moments like this. Seeing a farmer plowing a field is nothing special in most places around the world, but these beautiful working yaks all dressed up seems to lend a whole other quality. Not that what there doing is any more noble than what any oher farmer in the world does, but driving a team of yaks...that is pretty cool.

No culture is immune from those trying to make a buck offering dubious services. Then again, If you are going to get taken for a ride (a two minute Yak ride that is), this is certainly an incredibly beautiful location to do so. Although Kathy didn't even want to go for the Yak ride, I think we convinced her she should becuase this was likely her only chance she would ever get to ride one. Anyway, we had probably been driving for at least 4 hours by that point so this once-in-a-lifetime-event was a welcome change. And did I mention the scenery...

Threshing the Barley

Once the yaks have done their job in removing the grain from the panicle (as seen in the last post), it is time to sort the grain from the stalk and then winnow the chaff from the grain. Once again, the process is a community effort.
Not having grown up around farming, I was fascinated by the process.

The Running of the Yaks

One of the the great benefits of not taking public transit and having your own driver when traveling (first time I have ever had this luxury) is the ability to yell "STOP!! Cool yak things going on up ahead!!!" Without a doubt, this yak experience was the best of the bunch.
After the barley has been harvested a village will gather up all the yaks on a large concrete pad and drive them around in circles over the harvest to separate the grain from the husk. I guess you could say, may hoofs make for light work.
For me, this was one of the biggest highlights of the trip and being able to get right into the action and film this experience was a total blast.

Barley Harvest

When you watch the barley harvest in Tibet you get the feeling that the methods have not changed much in the last 500 years (other than the clothes). Horses, carts and backbreaking work.

In watching this again, I think I missed an opportuniity to work much harder on the audio portion. of the edit. I got lazy and looking at it now, it shows.

The Oldest Building in Tibet

Yumbulagang is considered to be the oldest building in Tibet built in the 7th century, although oldest is a relative term considering that it was sacked by the Red Guards during the Cultural Revolution.
That being said is has been lovingly reconstructed and when we visited we had it to ourselves which made for a very special vist. Great view too.

Tibetans think that Westerners are plain weak people and it is easy to see why as Kathy walks up the serpentine stairs of the Potala Palace the day after we arrived in Tibet. Adjusting to the high altitude of Lhasa which is 3700meters (12,139 feet) above sea level takes time no matter how 'strong' you are. Having to walk up another 117 meters (384 feet) worth of steps to get to the top of the Potala Palace is harder than it seems the day after you arrive in the country. The view though is certainly worth it once you get to the top.

Our guide's brother is actually one of the senior monks at the Palace so we were given an extra special tour and he gave us each traditional Katas (white silk scarf) that lends a positive note to the start of any enterprise which we thought was rather nice way to start our trip in Tibet.

Can't visit a country without a trip to the Market. These 'Tibetan' markets are usally run by Chinese rather than the Tibetan's themselves so it is often dificult to pick who you are going to buy from. Some Chinese even dress up like Tibetans to look the part.

So the big question on your mind might be how much is 50 Yuan, well it is about $7. So did I get ripped off? I dunno but I thought it was a pretty nice piece of folk art, was easy to carry around for the rest of the trip and was certainly not thhe kind of thing you can find in any Tibetian store in any major city in North America.

Desert Walk

When you pass by what looks like a great desert sometimes you just have to stop, get out of your truck and take a quick walk. Trouble is, when you are still adjusting to the high altitude of Tibet, you can tire yourself out pretty quickly as Kathy learns. Next post, we will see a more overt version of the dificulty of that even climbing stairs at high altitudes can provide.

Word to wise, if a monk/ -apprentice ever asks you for money, he is simply a begger in monk's clothing. Monks can certainly rely on donations but are never to ask for them. So it is generally quite easy to spot the reals ones from the fake. These young boys I saw on the streets of Lhasa are the real deal so I certainly made a contribution after filming them.

Monk Tending Candles

When the pilgrims visit mon-asteries, they used to bring Yak butter as a fuel offering to help keep the candles burring. Today, vegetable oil is used which burns much cleaner and is actually much healthier for the Monks. This monk is tending to one of the monetary candles.

I had very little footage to work with in this sequence and there was also very little light. So I decided to slow the footage down which in addition to adding a nice dramatic quality to his work allowed me to get enough footage to make the sequence work.

Blue Truck Driving

Time to shift gears a bit. When you spend 16 days driving around in a beat up old workhorse of a Toyota truck through desert, mountains and rivers you can't help but grow attached to the thing. This video shows our blue truck in all its glory. The gooofy guy pointing at the camera is me getting my first glimpse of Mt. Everest. The shot at the end are my two travel companions Kathy and Andrew that are grabbing a snooze. Kathy wore a mask in the truck all the time becuase the dry dusty roads kicked up a lot of...well...dust.

The music track is 'Crunch' by the Doves from their Lost Sides CD. Although, it is very differnt that the other music in this series, I think it does a nice job of driving the video forward. I had a lot of fun making this video.

The Barkor Circuit

The Barkor circuit in Lhasa is a circumam -bulation route around the buildings surrounding the Jokhang Temple. It is an amazing site to watch the Pilgrams who come from all over the country walk around it almost endlessly. Take note of all the diffent regional influences in the clothes. At the start of the video, you will see a couple of people who are prostrating themselves around the circuit which earns you even more merit. Personally, seeing how some of the older people manage to carry themselves around, I think they are the ones who deserve the most merit

I probably spent more time editing this video than any of the others. I kept coming back to it for months on end. I finally ended up cutting about 4 minutes off the final edit and being more overt about cutting it to the beat of the music which is something I don;t generally do.

I found this girl with a number of her friends in the Yarlung valley around the Valley of Tombs. I asked her if she wouldn't mind singing a song to my camera. She chose a song that her mother used to sing to her. I think her voice is great.

I only wish I could have asked her to sing it twice so I could have got more footage to play with as I was editing it.

Ahhh that is the editor in me speaking. Forget him... the artist in me says I already have too many cuts as it is.

Buying Yak Cheese

I love Yaks (as you will see later...) so I had to try Yak cheese, but I only wanted a few pieces. Little bit of a language barrier between buyer and seller going on here. I ended up buying the whole darn chain and giving most of it to our guides (who rather enjoyed it). I was glad I tried it though cause Yaks are wicked cool animals. If you get the chance try Yak cheese, it is an experience. It is sort of like eating a hard cheese version of an everlasting gobstopper.

No fancy editing here and the video is nice and short.

P.S. I capitalize the 'Y' in Yak in this post becuase I think Yaks are worthy of such distinction

Jokhang Roof Workers

Who ever thought that pounding down and smoothing out the clay floors or roofs in Tibet could be such a musical and communial experience. This particular group is working on the roof of the Jokhang temple in Lhasa which is the most important temple and spiritual centre of Tibet. After the song was over another lady would come around and pour water to keep the floor damp and another song would start up again.

I wonder what kind of reaction a bunch of burly constructions workers in North America would get if they appproached their work in a similar musical fashion?

Prayer Wheels and Monks

Wherever you go in Tibet there are generally two things you can count on seeing, Prayer wheels and Monks. The idea behind a prayer wheel is that on them and/or inside them they contain prayers or mantra. Each time the wheels spins one revoltution the prayer is 'read'.

I am not exactly sure what it is but, I am not as happy as I was hoping I would be with the final outcome of this video. Perhaps, becuase it probably should have been two seperate ideas rather than one longer one. I really like the first half of it though. Perhaps I should have worked harder on this one. Enjoy the first half anyway ;)

Washing the boat

As I was traveling I was always on the lookout for repetitive motions. These gifts provide wonderful opportunities to get excellent coverage of your subject matter. Close-ups, wide shots, pans, and different angles allow you to cheat a multi-camera shoot because your subject is repeating the task over and over again. So when you get down to editing, you can really have a lot of fun because you have so many options available. I also like the length of this video, short and sweet.

If I lost all of my footage of this trip in a fire, this would be the video I would miss the most.

As I edited my footage, I often found that I had created short fragment sequences that were not 'big' enough to turn into seperate videos, But I liked many of them nonetheless. Blind Banjo Player

While traveling in Tibet through Gyantse I saw this Blind Busker playing his banjo outside a monastery. There was something about the way he played and sung that I found very alluring and haunting at the same time. I wish I knew what he was singing about.

Travels in Tibet

A couple of years ago, I went on a trip to Tibet. It was the first time that I had ever traveled with a video camera. When you travel with a mind of what experiences and memories might be interesting to preserve on video, you end up focusing on aspects that you may have previously given only a moment of notice. Farmers with their yaks, a young girl washing a boat or a village sifting their harvest all became magic moments through the lens of the camera. Over the course of 16 days I shot about 14 hours of video footage.

I spent the next year and a half editing that footage into a series of workable videos as time would permit me. Spending such a long time allowed me to revisit Tibet over and over again.

I will be posting my videos every so often. If you have plans to visit somewhere that I have shot I hope these inspire you to firm your plans. If you have no intention of traveling, I hope that you enjoy seeing the world through my lens.
